Thematic Comparison Paragraph
We have read many short stories in our English class The lottery, The Sniper, Harris Bergeron but the story I found amazing was “Lather and Nothing Else” by Hernando Tellez, a short story which I found very different from the literature I usually read. The theme this story portraits is “our roles determine our actions/ our actions determine our identity, this theme is similar to the short story “The Man Who Loved Flowers” by Stephen King.
“ Lather and Nothing” else is a story about a barber who had the opportunity to kill a rebel-executioner, by the name of Captain Torres but chose not to because of the risk “And when I recognized him I started to shake” this quote explains how frightened and insecure he became when Captain Torrez entered the shop.
The man who loved flowers” is about a man who was searching for a woman named Norma, “She looked up and smiled... but as they drew together, the smile faded” this quote talks about how he felt and how happy he was when he noticed a woman in an alley who he assumed was Norma but then he found out the truth when the woman told him she is not who he is looking for, his actions lead to the death of the woman as he killed her with a small handled hammer in which he pulled out from his pocket.

These two stories relate because they both describe the true personalities of two individuals and who they really are. We can tell that the barber in Lather and Nothing else was very scared and doubtful of himself as he was thinking of what the consequences could've been if he had killed Captain Torres. As for The Man Who Loved Flowers displayed how violent and physical he was by killing the innocent woman walking through the alley just because she was not who he was looking for. In other words the actions of an individual speak a lot louder than words and they represent our identity.
